उन्नीसवीं सदी में इंग्लैंड के कुछ अंग्रेज उद्योगपति स्वतंत्र रूप से तथा मनमाने ढंग से भारतीय किसानों से नील की खेती अपनी शर्तों पर करवाते थे तथा उन्हें मामूली मेहनताना देकर नील उत्पादों को यूरोप एवं एशिया के बाजार में बेचकर बड़ा मुनाफा कमाते थे। 1917 में महात्मा गाँधी द्वारा चलाए गए नील आंदोलन के बाद अंग्रेजों का नील उत्पाद से होने वाला मुनाफा काफी कम हो गया, जिसके कारण चम्पारण में बसे तकरीबन सभी अंग्रेज जमींदारों ने अपनी जमीन बेच दी और इंग्लैंड वापस चले गए। नील उत्पादन के काल में भारतीय समाज की राजनैतिक, सामाजिक, आर्थिक, सांस्कृतिक, शैक्षणिक एवं औद्योगिक स्थिति एवं परिवेश का वर्णन इस पुस्तक में एक अंग्रेज रॉबर्ट परिवार के उत्थान-पतन एवं इंग्लैंड जाकर पुनः भारत वापसी की कहानी के माध्यम से किया गया है। जैक रोबट लंदन का एक अपराधी प्रवृत्ति का दबा विक्रता या तथा दया के दुरुपयोग से उसने कई लोगों की हत्या कर दी थी और उनके धन लूट लिए थे।

]]> पुस्तक के लेखक शम्भू प्रसाद सिंह का जन्म 20.12.1948 को बिहार प्रांत के पूर्वी चम्पारण जिले का मच्छरगानों ग्राम में हुआ था। इन्होंने इलेक्ट्रिकल इंजीनियरिंग की डिग्री बिहार विश्वविद्यालय के एम.आई.टी. से 1971-72 में हासिल की तथा उसी वर्ष सितम्बर में सेल बोकारो स्टील प्लांट में नौकरी शुरू की तथा स्टील प्लांट के विभिन्न संकायों एवं इकाइयों में सफलतापूर्वक जिम्मेदारियों का निर्वहन करते हुए दिसम्बर 2008 में सेवानिवृत्त हुए तथा झारखंड प्रांत के बोकारो स्टील सिटी के सेक्टर 12-बी में स्थायी रूप से निवास कर रहे हैं। इन्होंने हिंदी एवं अंग्रेजी में कई पुस्तकों की रचना की है। ‘नालंदा से सोमनाथ तक’, ‘कुमारिल का आत्मदाह एवं झारखंड के 5000 वर्ष’ इनकी प्रमुख रचनाएँ हैं।
